YNW Melly’s murder trial has finally gotten underway, with jury selection reportedly starting on Monday (April 10).
While details remain scarce at this time, the jury selection process is expected to take weeks due to the popularity of Melly’s case. Judge John J. Murphy III will be presiding over the trial, and Melly’s mother celebrated its start on Instagram.

“Official update on YNW Melly we started jury selection today and will continue over the next 2 weeks,” she wrote. “Trial will start June 5, 2023. No more delays. #freemelly2023.”
She captioned the post, “Melly coming home. Today I went to court expecting more delays but we started jury selection. I can’t explain how I feel my anxiety is everywhere but God got us.”
It’s been three years since YNW Melly was arrested and accused of murdering YNW Juvy (Christopher Thomas Jr.) and YNW Sakchaser (Anthony D’Andre Williams). YNW’s trial has been delayed several times since his arrest in 2018, with jury selection supposed to kick off last April.
The process was delayed as both sides continued to deliberate the framework of evidence being used in the courtroom, however, Melly received an early legal victory last July when a judge ruled the death penalty could be taken off the table.
Unfortunately, the judge also allowed Melly’s numerous tattoos to be used as evidence by prosecutors, who claim they “prove that one of the reasons behind this murder was a gang affiliation.”
As the trial finally crept closer, Melly’s mother shared a heartfelt letter the “Murder On My Mind” rapper had written to her, and again reaffirmed her son’s innocence.
