Waka Flocka Flame has opened up about his past, saying that he and Gucci Mane might have been dead today had they not met each other during the late 2000s.
During an episode of the Fresh & Fit Podcast on Tuesday (March 21), Waka spoke about the nature of his and Gucci’s relationship in the early days. He said he met Gucci Mane shortly after his mother, Debra Antney, convinced him to go on the road with her so he could stay out of trouble.

“To me, I looked at Gucci like fuck it, we had become best friends,” he said. “It was like big brother, little brother shit until we seen eye to eye with each other, once upon a time. But, I seen [Gucci] as an investment for my mom so I had to protect the investment, and I just learned the game.”
“My first time meeting Gucci was at a club. He was performing at a club and he had like a good local song that n-ggas that robbed loved. We used to just love this record, it was our anthem, me and my patnas. He had some shit called, “Black Tee.”
Waka Flocka then said after a show Gucci Mane did, people starting referring to him as the rapper’s “hypeman” which allowed him to flourish in his own right and continue touring.
He continued: “When I got with Gucci, I seen that he was just like me. If I never got with Gucci, me and him probably wouldn’t be alive. The biggest thing I’ve learned over the years is, we needed each other to go forward.”
Waka Flocka spoke about Gucci Mane in similar fashion during a January 2023 episode of Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast.
“Me and Gucci ain’t been best of friends since my first fucking mixtape,” he said. “We always was like this. I ain’t gone lie, I’m over talking about it but it’s his life. I know I ain’t do nothing flaw. That’s all I’ma say.”

“We good, but he doing something totally different. I wouldn’t move how he move. I couldn’t do that. I’m just sorry. He happy doing what he doing and shit, I’m happy doing what I’m doing, so if it ever intertwine at a time and place, then it’s what it is. But, he happy, and that’s all I ever wanted, to see my dog happy.”
