Usher had to hold back from serenading Gabrielle Union during a show over the weekend because he didn’t want any smoke with Dwyane Wade, who was also in attendance.

On Sunday (September 24), the Texas native performed the first show of his residency at La Seine Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. The NBA Hall of Famer and his wife were in the audience that night, which meant Usher had to approach them at some point per his recurring practice of singing directly to celebrity attendees.

Upon walking up to the power couple, however, he made sure to stay within his limits.

“Let’s not get carried away,” the Confessions crooner told the audience as the music stopped. “Y’know, this is Dwyane Wade — I ain’t crazy! That man will knock my whole head off and then dunk it!”

The basketball legend himself shared the clip to his Instagram Stories, tagging the singer and captioning it: “Love and Respect [crown emoji].”

In recent months, Usher has made a habit of serenading women during his concerts, generating a range of reactions from their partners.

Most notably, Keke Palmer stirred up drama earlier this year while attending the R&B icon’s residency in Las Vegas. The Nope star had a night to remember in early July when the 44-year-old sang to her during a performance of “There Goes My Baby.”

The steamy clip showed Keke wearing a see-through black lace dress and under garment as she hugged and danced next to Usher, who had ventured into the audience to woo the actress.

As the footage went viral on social media, her boyfriend, Darius Jackson, took to Twitter to share his not-so-impressed reaction to her wardrobe choice.

“It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” he posted soon after the clip began making the rounds online.

After facing blowback for critiquing the mother of his child, Jackson double-downed on his line of thinking.

“We live in a generation where a man of the family doesn’t want the wife & mother to his kids to showcase booty cheeks to please others & he gets told how much of a hater he is,” he wrote. “This is my family & my representation. I have standards & morals to what I believe. I rest my case.”

Joe Budden and Quavo are among the many stars to have their partners put to the test by Usher, though they didn’t seem quite as bothered by it as Palmer’s partner.
