Uncle Luke, the legendary leader of 2 Live Crew, has sent a reminder to all rappers that he “went to jail” to protect their freedom of speech.

The raunchy rap star took to Instagram on Thursday (April 18) and shared a photo of him being frisked against a cop car by a police officer.

He wrote: “I went to jail for Hip-Hop so you could say the shit you’re saying on record don’t you forget it.”

Commenters were quick to pay tribute, with one user writing: “They didn’t know. And I was there that day and witness it all…”

Another said: “That’s a fact. Coach Luke is the only rapper people that took on the federal government and won his freedom of speech case. [hang loose emoji, muscle flex emoji, handclap emoji].”

Luke is referencing the controversy surrounding 2 Live Crew’s now-celebrated album As Nasty As They Wanna Be.

Multiple counties in Florida tried to ban the group’s album from being sold after a federal judge ruled it to be obscene following its 1989 release. Some record store owners were arrested, as were Luke and fellow group member Fresh Kid Ice during a performance in 1990.

Earlier this month, the rapper born Luther Campbell announced he was contemplating entering a local race against an incumbent in his local Florida district.

In an interview with The Bulwark, Uncle Luke explained his decision making process regarding a potential run for incumbent Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick’s 20th Congressional district seat.

He said: “I’m living my ideal. I have the opportunity to bring something back to the community…And I get to fight these motherfuckers.”

He clarified that those “motherfuckers” include: “Matt Gaetz, Donald Trump, and all these crazy-ass Republicans who want to divide us.”

He concluded in the most Uncle Luke way imaginable: “I’m gonna be as nasty as I wanna be.”

In anticipation of his bid, Campbell established a political committee in January called Don’t Stop Get It Get It.

“Campbell has had informal conversations with political consultants in South Florida to help run his primary campaign,” reports The Bulwark. “He has also been followed around by a Los Angeles-based documentary film crew, whose name he’s keeping secret for now.”

Campbell said he’ll decide whether to run before April 26, the race entry deadline in the state of Florida. The primary elections are set August 20.
