Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper & Kamasi Washington have delivered their first new single as the group Dinner Party since their 2020 debut album.

Appearing on the new track without original fourth member 9th Wonder, the trio tapped Ant Clemons to join them on “Insane,” which was released on Wednesday (March 8).

The piano and saxophone-heavy mid-tempo track, produced by Sounwave and Terrace Martin, is built around a sample of Mtume’s classic song, “Juicy Fruit.”

While they have not announced plans for a new project, Dinner Party appears to be getting active again, as “Insane” arrived a day before the group’s high-profile performance at Terminal 5 in New York City.

According to Setlist.fm, Terrace Martin, Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper performed the new track along with just two song from their 2020 debut, “Sleepless Nights” and “Freeze Tag,” with Arin Ray stepping in for singer Phoelix.

The performance may also have included the remix to their song “First Responders,” which features Bilal, who joined them on stage at the show. Beyond those three Dinner Party songs, the rest of their concert featured individual songs by Terrace Martin and Kamasi Washington, as well as covers of songs by Kendrick Lamar, R+R=NOW and A Tribe Called Quest.

Dinner Party officially formed in 2019, after years of history between its founding members. Terrace Martin’s connection to his groupmates goes back to grade school, with he and Kamasi Washington attending high school together; and he and Robert Glasper becoming friends at Jazz camp.

The three linked up with 9th Wonder after Glasper and Martin had gone on tour, and had a completed projected by the end of 2021.

Dinner Party’s self-titled debut LP features Phoelix as the only guest artist; but three months after its release, the group returned with Dinner Party: Dessert, a collection of remixes of the original project, with appearances by Buddy, Rapsody, Ruben Vincent, and Snoop Dogg to name a few.

The original Dinner Party EP landed on HipHopDX‘s Best R&B Albums of 2020 list.

While 9th Wonder does not appear on Dinner Party’s latest single, he remains supportive of the group, sharing “Insane” to his social media profiles on its release day.

The group’s official Instagram account also tagged 9th on a post announcing their appearance at this year’s Coachella.

Dinner Party is set to perform as part of the Saturday lineup on both weekends of the renowned appearances on April 15 and April 22.
