Rory & Mal have argued that Ice Spice wouldn’t be as successful as she is if she were a dark-skinned woman, with their producer adding that the Bronx native isn’t even talented.

The conversation was started by New Rory & Mal producer Demaris, who said frankly that Spice would have never gotten this far if she was a dark-skinned woman. The comments come as conversations were reportedly floating around online about Spice’s skin color following the special invite she received to the 2023 Met Gala by Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour.

“If we saying that colorism doesn’t exist because a dark-skinned girl could never soar the way that fucking Ice Spice did off having zero to no talent,” Demaris said.

“Ice Spice has no talent?” Rory chimed in.

“You think Ice Spice is a talented rapper?” Demaris replied.

“I think she’s a talented person, rap wouldn’t be it, but there’s a talent there.”

Demaris continued by saying that frankly she’s not a fan of Spice’s music, but added that she wasn’t “hating” on the “Princess Diana” rapper.

“If she was dark-skinned she would not be as big as she is,” she continued. “That’s what I said. That’s not taking anything away from her.”

Commenters seemed to agree with Demaris’ take, with one arguing: “I agree with Demaris! If we’re talking talent someone like Flo Milli should’ve been where Ice Spice is now yearssss ago. Unfortunately since she’s dark skinned she probably won’t ever get that same acceptance in those type of spaces bc of her complexion.”

Another commenter disagreed with the argument, writing: “No talent is a stretch. Just because people are not the absolute best at their craft does not mean it’s no talent. That debate is not valid cause it’s hate.”

Regardless, it’s impossible to deny that Ice Spice is having a blockbuster 2023. Her and Nicki Minaj’s new record “Princess Diana” outsold the entire Top 25 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart combined at the end of April, and allowed Ice Spice to nab her first No. 1 Hot Rap Song after appearing on the charts four previous times.

Additionally, “Princess Diana” now has the eighth spot in chart history featuring at least two solo women, which dates back to 1989 (including rappers and singers).

While Spice seemingly came out of nowhere, it was recently reported that her father was actually a prominent underground rapper back in the day and that he had been working with her on her bars.

“He definitely inspired me to want to record,” she told Paper. “I remember being in the studio with him. I was a toddler, probably. And I remember little flashes. Of course, not every detail, but small things like that being shown to you at such a young age make an impression on you.”

She continued: “Subconsciously, I ended up becoming an artist because I saw my father be one first. He’s a music lover himself. He’s a true Hip Hop head, beyond me, honestly. He knows everything. He’s always educating me on Hip Hop and shit like that.”
