Rod Wave has found inspiration from all over for his music, and one of the sources was a woman he used to date who was obsessed with NBA YoungBoy.
Talking to his fans on an Instagram Live on Tuesday (January 16), Rod recalled the pre-fame relationship that ultimately inspired him to turn things up with music.

“One of my girls I used to fuck with, she was so fucking in love with NBA YoungBoy,” he began. “I was like 17 years old living in my own crib. I remember she was just so fucked up about bro. And I just used to be in my living room watching bro’s videos and shit and I used to be like damn, he’s turned up. So I tried to turn it up. That’s real shit.”
He continued: “And now we here. It’s crazy bruh how much a n-gga took and just used it. Like damn. That’s what made me take shit serious though, like just seeing other n-ggas. That shit inspired me.”

Rod Wave would ultimately go on to collaborate with NBA YoungBoy more than once when he got on, but recently, the latter revealed that he feels a full joint project with Rod might actually be a “setback” for the Florida singer.
“That’s somebody who will be forever winning in the game,” YoungBoy said in an interview with Bootleg Kev published earlier this month. “I think he love what he do. I think he’s so positive. I think he’s so taking in to the people of how he feel.”

YoungBoy responded to the idea of a collab project with Wave: “I think that would be a setback for him. My image fucked up. I think I gotta stay in my own lane.”
Previously, NBA YoungBoy recruited Rod Wave for a rare guest appearance on The Last Slimeto‘s “Home Ain’t Home” in 2022 as well as Decided 2‘s “Better Than Ever” last year.
Their friendship has seemingly proven to be an issue for Fredo Bang, however, who believes that Rod Wave no longer texts him back because of his past beef with YB – despite them since settling their issues.
“Tell Rod Wave — he seen me fuckin’ write him,” he said in a November Instagram Live. “I know he best friends with dude now. That why he stopped texting me.”

Fans quickly guessed that the “dude” was YB, as his “Better Than Ever” collab with Rod had just recently dropped.
