Issa Rae‘s original dramedy Rap Sh!t, which was inspired and executive produced by the City Girls has been canceled by Max just weeks after wrapping its second season.
The Hollywood Reporterbroke the news on Thursday (January 18) that Rap Sh!t wouldn’t be returning to the Discovery and Warner-backed streaming giant for a third season.

“We are extremely grateful to Issa Rae for creating Rap Sh!t, a one-of-a-kind comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish,” a Max spokesperson wrote in a statement.
“A huge thank you to Issa, showrunner Syreeta Singleton and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for introducing us to Shawna and Mia, a duo whose journey fans have been invested in and who they have continued to root for through everything. We’ll never get “Seduce and Scheme” out of our heads and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Issa Rae issued a statement to Variety about the pride she feels surrounding what the show accomplished during its time on air, writing: “I’m so proud of and grateful for Syreeta, our cast, writers and crew that made this show possible. Thanks to Sarah Aubrey and Suzanna Makkos for championing the show, and much love to the fans that tuned in weekly to root for our girls.”
Rap Sh!t featured a cast that included KaMillion, Aida Osman, Jonica Booth, RJ Cyler, Jacob Gibson, Kat Cunning, Kyle Barry and more.
Max has been shrinking its original programming catalog and Rap Sh!t isn’t the only show getting canned as Julia and Our Flag Means Death were also both scrapped.
Loosely based on the rise of the City Girls, Rap Sh!t served as Issa Rae’s first scripted brainchild on the heels of Insecure. Since debuting season one in July 2022, the show garnered nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards and the NAACP Image Awards.

Issa Rae is next set to serve as an executive producer on the upcoming Seen & Heard, a two-part docuseries delving into the history of Black television.
