L.A. rapper Lil Sodi — a rising artist with many ties to the Crips street gang — has died, according to Afroman, who has been working with the rapper on several projects.

On Friday (August 4), the Grammy-nominated rapper took to Instagram to confirm the news that Sodi (real name Madsodi Simpson) had passed, though he didn’t reveal the date or cause of his death.

Paying tribute to Sodi — who he was in the middle of a tour with — by captioning a photo of them together with a series of emojis, Afroman’s post also caught the attention of DJ Premier.

“Some of the worst news of an incredible human being! Damn sure gonna miss you Sodi. Condolences to your family,” the Gang Starr legend wrote in the comments of Afroman’s post.

Adam22, who interviewed Lil Sodi on his No Jumper podcast back in 2021, also paid tribute on Twitter.

Though the L.A. rapper should have been known for his music career — he had just released his seven-track EP, Too Good for Hell (Too Bad for Heaven), on Thursday (August 3) — he was better known for his various scrapes with other rappers.

In addition to his beef with Nipsey Hussle (which culminated with the song “Fuck Nipsey”), he found himself in the midst of a well-publicized brawl between Afroman and Young Buck back in June.

The incident took place at the end of June after the former G-Unit rapper refused to leave the stage after he reportedly performed. He then got into it with Lil Sodi after Buck allegedly slapped him in the stomach in the VIP section of the establishment. This chain of events set off a melee between a few of Afroman’s people and Young Buck.

After the incident, Buck took to Instagram in a now-deleted post and lashed out at the “Because I Got High” artist. In his post, Young Buck said that he was trying to show love to everyone, contrary to what took place.

He added: “They should of told u I got hands thug [face with glasses emoji]!!. Come see what this shit do [100 emoji] [exclamation points emojis] [face with glasses emojis].”

Afroman also took to Instagram to explain his side of this conflict. The 48-year-old rapper uploaded a video which showed Young Buck with a half empty bottle of Jack Daniels appearing inebriated, while attempting to light a cigarette. There were a few people on stage that were gesturing him to leave the stage, which he eventually did.

HipHopDX extends its condolences to Lil Sodi’s friends and family.
