Kid Cudi is known for pushing the boundaries of his art, and he’s done the same with his voice role in the forthcoming Trolls Band Together film.

The only problem is, according to an interview with the film’s director for Cover Media (via Yahoo!), he didn’t let anyone else know what he was up to, until he went into the booth and hit the record button.

“He came up with this whole voice,” Walt Dohrn said of the “Day N’ Nite” rapper. “We hire him, we talk with him, he’s excited to be a part of the Trolls universe, and then six months later, I think it was, he came in to record for the first time and he’s like, ‘I’ve been trying this voice.’ He developed the voice on his own and we said, ‘Absolutely, that’s great.'”

Cudi, who will play Clay in the film, took a big risk with move, but it ultimately paid off. “A lot of time we encourage the actors to use their own voice to add some realism because the characters are so wild and the world is weird and so fantastic, but in this case, it just fit this character,” Dohrn said.

On the music side of things, Kid Cudi recently revealed during a performance that A$AP Rocky, Young Thug and a host of his other rap contemporaries will be featured on his forthcoming album, INSANO.

“We got Travis [Scott], we got [A$AP] Rocky, we got Lil [Yachty], who else, we got a couple,” Kid Cudi told the crowd. “Oh yeah we got [Young] Thug on there, I got Pusha [T]. That’s enough, I don’t want to — I got more than that, but that’s enough.”

Kid Cudi has been dropping a lot of hints and tidbits regarding the arrival of INSANO recently. Earlier this month, the Cleveland artist took to Twitter to inform fans that his previously postponed album has been bulked up further with more songs and features in time for its release next year.

“There are 40+ songs on INSANO between the main album and deluxe(s).  Ur welcome.  2024 the take over begins,” he tweeted.

The 39-year-old then added: “I am positive this album will have everything u need from me, the fun, the deep thoughts, the inspiration to go out and live ur life and be great, the love, the madness, all of it.  And I have a wonderful cast of features that im sure u all will love.”

He also said that the tracklist is reminiscent of Indicud and that it was designed for him to take on the road in 2024.
