J.I.D has revealed that Mac Miller was responsible for convincing him to do his verse on Imagine Dragons’ smash hit “Enemy” after initially not wanting to do it.
Speaking on the Throwing Fits podcast, the Dreamville rapper said he had no intentions of collaborating with Dan Reynolds and co. but Mac told him it would be one of the biggest songs of his career.

“This was when Mac was alive when I did this verse ’cause he told me to do the song,” J.I.D said around the 38-minute mark. “He’s like, ‘It was going to be the biggest shit of your career.’ He’s like, ‘Bro, do this song.’ But I wasn’t going to do it at all. It was a little pushback, but at the same time, this is a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”
He continued: “I probably lost points with Hip Hop purists that said that ain’t Hip Hop. It’s at a billion streams, so I don’t care.”
Mac Miller had the right idea as “Enemy” became one of the biggest hits of 2021. It was released in October of that year and landed in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, giving J.I.D his first song to hit that mark.
In an Instagram post from 2021, J.I.D revealed his verse was originally for a song he was doing with Mac, but the late rapper advised using it for the Imagine Dragons record.
“I wrote this verse a couple years ago but initially the opening lines were from a song I started with Mac, he told me it would fit better on this song and I’m glad he did.”
J.I.D was recently recruited to perform at the 2023 Lollapalooza Festival taking place August 3 – 6 in Chicago’s Grant Park.
Joining J.I.D at the annual festival will be Kendrick Lamar, Pusha T, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Lil Yachty, Tems, Joey Bada$$, Key Glock, Ken Carson, Zack Fox, Mavi and a slew of others. Presale for tickets will begin on the festival’s website on Thursday (March 23) at 10 am CT.
