Los Angeles, CA

JAY-Z, the late DMX and Ja Rule are all individual Hip Hop legends in their own right. In 1995, Irv Gotti convinced them to form the supergroup Murder Inc., which would later become the name of his label. Their run was incredibly brief and the trio never did release an official album.

On Sunday (June 26), HipHopDX caught up with Gotti on the red carpet at the 2022 BET Awards. Wearing a suit — which he said he instantly regretted due to the sweltering Los Angeles heat that day — Gotti announced the release date of the Murder Inc. docu-series while touching on the group’s short-lived history.

“I gotta lot of big things coming,” he said, noting that’s why he was looking so formal. “I gotta lot of announcements coming, so I wanted to give them a different feel, my executive feel. My Murder Inc. documentary is coming August 9 at 9 p.m. and right after, at 10 p.m., Tales Season 3. Tune in. It’s dope.”

As for the Murder Inc. supergroup, he confirmed, “It’s all in the doc. Watch the doc. That group was something that I felt special about ’cause all three of them is like my brothers. I knew all three of them like 10 years before we all got on. I knew Jay since ’87, I knew X since ’88, I knew Ja since ’91. Just understand, I knew that those three was gonna conquer the world before they conquered the world. So that project was just me being greedy, knowing they all nice and I wanted to do an album.”

Irv Gotti announced the docu-series — the aptly titled MURDER INC. — would air in five parts and tell “the untold tale of the rise, sudden fall and redemption” of the label and its founder earlier this year. Executive produced by Irv Gotti and Ja Rule, the show will premiere on BET.

“I got to start my record label with Ja Rule by my side,” Gotti said at the time “My life was filled with great lows, but I’m not ashamed of those lows. It all helped make me the person I am today. With this documentary series, I plan to tell the truth and nothing but the truth.”

‘Untold’ Story Of Irv Gotti & Ja Rule's Murder Inc. Records To Be Told In BET Docuseries

Founded in 1998, Murder Inc. soon established itself as a Hip Hop and R&B powerhouse, dominating the Billboard charts and radio airwaves with artists such as Ja Rule, Ashanti and Christina Milian. But a high-profile feud with 50 Cent and G-Unit, as well as a federal investigation over alleged ties with Queens, New York drug lord Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff led to its demise.

But in 2013, Gotti relaunched the label under his new company, Visionary, and then partnered with Kevin Liles and 300 Entertainment in 2017. Expect to learn about the entire Murder Inc. journey in the forthcoming docu-series when it airs August 9 at 9 p.m. ET on BET.
