The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is one of the biggest songs to come out in the last two years. The song has already broken several Billboard chart records and acquired massive streaming numbers. Despite The Weeknd moving on to the next phase of his career with his next album, people are still getting their After Hours fix.
On Monday (September 6), Chart Data reported on Twitter that The Weeknd’s smash hit “Blinding Lights” just hit 2.5 billion streams on Spotify, and it’s also the fastest song in history to reach the rare milestone. Only eight songs have hit 2 billion streams on Spotify, and “Blinding Lights” is the only record along with Ed Sheeran’s 2017 hit “Shape Of You” to hit 2.5 billion.
The Weeknd unleashed “Blinding Lights” as the second single off his fourth studio album, After Hours,on November 29, 2019. The record debuted at No. 11 but went No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 30, 2020, spending four weeks at the top of the charts.
Last month, The Weeknd kicked off his new era with a brand new song titled “Take My Breath.” It’s a disco pop-inspired record about someone having an intense infatuation with their lover. The Weeknd dropped an accompanying Cliqua-directed video that finds him in all sorts of hedonistic fun.
