Lil Wayne was one of 143 people pardoned or commutated by Donald Trump on Tuesday (January 19), his last full day in the Oval Office. On Thursday (January 21), Weezy thanked Trump via Twitter for commuting his gun charges as he awaited sentencing.

“I want to thank President Trump for recognizing that I have so much more to give to my family, my art, and my community,” he wrote. “I also want to thank @bradfordcohen for working so diligently to secure another chance for me. Love!”

Wayne, who publicly endorsed Trump prior to the 2020 election with a photo-op, pleaded guilty to federal weapon charges in December 2020 and faced up to 10 years behind bars. Weezy is already a convicted felon after being locked up on gun charges in 2009.

Feds were tipped off about Wayne’s private plane containing illegal weapons and drugs, so when his jet landed Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, law enforcement searched the Young Money mogul’s possessions and found a gold Remington 1911, .45-caliber handgun loaded with ammunition and a bag containing cocaine, ecstasy and oxycodone.

Wayne’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, who also represents Kodak Black, has a previous relationship with Trump and was a fired contestant on Season 2 of The Apprentice reality show in 2004. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he insisted Wayne’s endorsement wasn’t a tactical move.

“I think they had a very strong connection,” he said.“He’s in the entertainment world. “He’s got a style that’s similar in terms of the way that he carries himself, and a lot of rappers and people in the industry relate to that.”
