Bay Area artist DJ Platurn consistently drops mixes paying tribute to some of Hip Hop’s most revered artists, including Native Tongues and Outkast. But this time, he got a special Facebook request from DJ Trex for one dedicated to Redman, Trex’s favorite MC of all time.

“Trex explained to me he’s a nurse working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and proclaimed he always wanted something like this in his possession and now would be the time to make it happen, especially with the future being so uncertain,” Platurn tells HipHopDX. “I got a lump in my throat for real, so I agreed without hesitation.

“We swiftly made a connection and have become friends over the last few months, checking in to see what the progress looks like on each of our ends. I took the project very seriously and am truly happy to present this to the world, on his behalf of course.”

Trex discovered Platurn’s music very organically. One night at Club Waziema in San Francisco, he heard a song called “So This Is De La Heaven,” a De La Soul/Teenage Fanclub remix cooked up by Platurn — that was all it took.

“I got up and went to the bar and asked what this was on the stereo,” Trex tells DX. “The bartender handed me a CD and I wrote the title down on a napkin. I had to find this mix somehow, so I made a trip to Amoeba and found a copy and listened to it again and again.

Method Man Admits His Live Shows Were "Chaotic" Until Redman Set Him Straight

“When a global pandemic forced artists to stop entertaining in public, I reached out to Platurn and asked if he could treat my favorite Reggie Noble songs with the same love and appreciation that he showed Pos, Trugoy and Maseo. I told him that as a nurse, watching people live, heal, suffer and die, music helps to heal the pain. Stop what you are doing and listen to a mix that will get you so loud, you would swear Redman was inside the truck.”
