The 2019 BET Awards aired on Sunday night (June 23) and viewers got a sneak peek at the upcoming film Queen & Slim. The intriguing clip tells the tale of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde who are on the run after Slim, played by Daniel Kaluuya of Get Out fame, is forced to shoot a police officer in self-defense.
The brief preview is set to a carefully curated soundtrack, which includes The Pharcyde’s iconic hit, “Runnin,” breathing new life into the classic cut.
Slimkid3, one of the original members of the veteran Hip Hop group, was shocked to hear the song in the trailer.
“That was huge,” he told HipHopDX. “I can’t wait to see that. It’s amazing to see how much light is being brought to the subject of what we experience in the black community. It’s feeling like more and more, we are growing closer to a them verses us scenario.

“When I watched the this trailer, it made me anxious to see how this movie plays out. I like how it is bringing more attention to the subject of police brutality issue. To hear our music in the trailer was amazing, and to think someone thought to use it to push forward such a controversial message is awesome.”
Helmed by Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe (Netflix’s Master of None) and director Melina Matsoukas, the film begins in Ohio with a couple on a first date.
According to the YouTube description, “a black man [Kaluuya] and a black woman [newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith] are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The situation escalates, with sudden and tragic results, when the man kills the police officer in self-defense.
