One day after announcing plans to create a Mac Miller documentary, filmmaker CJ Wallis has hit the pause button on the project. On Tuesday (June 4), Wallis said he’s halted work on the film at the request of Miller’s family.
“We tweeted our intentions to begin developing a doc on Mac over the next year,” he wrote via Twitter. “At the same time, we reached out to all those closest to him to begin the process of making it official.”
He continued, “We heard back from @christianclancy & The Estate who said the family has requested we hold off on the project at this time. We immediately compiled as the last thing we’d want is to negatively impact anyone involved, quite the opposite.”
Wallis also addressed why he made the original announcement without the permission of Miller’s family.

“We felt comfortable announcing our intentions in advance of receiving permission because they were just that – intentions,” he wrote. “The concept was peers telling their one favorite Mac story & cutting them together as a motivational & positive picture. Not a life story.”
While the documentary idea hasn’t been scrapped, Wallis is unsure if he’ll be able to continue it at a later date.
“The outpouring of support for the doc and that it was us trying to make one was humbling, and in time perhaps we will get to see it through,” he noted. “For now, we have hours of incredible music and thats always been more than enough. Respect/Love…. #ripmac.”

CJ Wallis, a filmmaker best known by Hip Hop fans as the creative director for Curren$y’s Jet Life imprint, is making a documentary about Mac Miller. Wallis announced his plans to profile the late rapper via social media on Monday (June 3).
“So, over the next year I’m going to start collecting interviews & content to make the definitive @MacMiller documentary for his family, friends & fans,” he wrote on Twitter. “Please share & tag anyone you think we need to speak with! #birdseyeview #ripmac.”
Wallis’ previous documentary work includes Jetflix, a series about Curren$y’s life on tour and in the studio that premiered on Pitchfork.tv. He also created Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much, a feature-length film about Price Is Right superfan Ted Slauson. Perfect Bid is currently available to stream on Netflix.
Miller passed away last September at the age of 26. The cause of death was an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.
