New York, NY

Mary J. Blige has been given a role in the third season of MTV’s limited Scream series. According to a press release, Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Entertainment will executive produce.

The Grammy Award-winning R&B legend joins the previously announced all-star cast, which includes Keke Palmer, Tyler Posey, Tyga and C.J. Wallace.

Scream is set in Atlanta and centers on Deion Elliot, a local star football running back whose tragic past comes back to haunt him and threatens his future and the lives of his friends. Blige plays Deion’s mother, Sherry Elliot.

Most recently, Blige starred as Florence Jackson in the 2017 Netflix film Mudbound, earning her first Oscar nomination at the 90th Annual Academy Awards.

She performed her song “Mighty River” during the award ceremony.

In addition to Scream, Blige will also appear in the upcoming Netflix original series The Umbrella Academy, which is expected to premiere in 2019.

Although Blige is no stranger to television — she’s appeared on ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder, Black-ish and FOX’s Empire The Umbrella Academy will mark her first recurring television role.
