Earlier this year, officials in Houston announced that Trae Tha Truth would be honored with the key to the city, yet the ceremony – which was tied to the rapper’s 10th annual TraeDay event – was delayed due to the devastating impact of Hurricane Harvey.
Nevertheless, at a charity basketball game held on Friday (December 15), the veteran rapper was finally presented with the accolade by Houston’s mayor, Sylvester Turner.
The honor was given in part for the tireless work Trae did in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, though he has long been a philanthropist in and around the Houston area.
“You know, back at TraeDay they told me I was the first rapper with the key to the city,” Trae said in a video uploaded to Instagram. “Well today, the mayor and everybody in the city and all the officials showed up to actually give me the key to the city … The first rapper in the city with it, man … I’m sitting over here trippin’, man. It’s crazy. I don’t even know what that means: ‘I got a key to the city,’ but let’s get it.”
