New York City

Veteran New York City DJ’s Funkmaster Flex and DJ Clue have never appeared to be chummy over the years of competition through their respective platforms, Hot 97 and Power 105.1.

In a recent interview with ThisIs50, Flex decided to speak his mind about his longtime rival.

“You know the funny thing is about Clue?” Flex asked June Archer with a smirk. “I respect Clue and Clue’s a good guy. But you know what he has trouble with? He’s a wack DJ. You know how you play music? He’s a wack DJ! He should make an effort to change that perception.”

Ironically, the slander came right before Flex openly admitted he had a few things to work on himself — namely, “talking shit.” He then proceeded to shut down notions of going head-to-head, deeming it totally pointless.

“When the battle stuff comes up, they’re doing that to you because they know you’re wack on the set,” he exclaimed. “You could never battle Flex — but nigga, get better on the set! If you do not take your craft serious enough to practice at it, then it’s cool. And that’s no diss to him. He’s a mixtape DJ and he’s a great producer.”

In 1998, as part of JAY-Z’s now defunct Roc-A-Fella Records, Clue released the first installment of his star-studded Professional album series. He eventually nabbed a platinum plaque, solidifying his commercial presence for years to come. He also scored production for cohorts, such as JAY-Z and Fabolous, hammering home Flex’s point.

Not to be outdone, Flex released several gold-selling compilation albums during the late 90s as well, so this is a battle the heads have been wanting to see for a while.

Flex rounded out the interview by ousting Clue from a circle that included DJ Clark Kent, DJ Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, DJ SNS, Marley Marl and Kid Capri.

It didn’t take long for the word to get back to Clue, who had a few choice words for Flex. Most notably, he took aim at Flex’s club record selection, dubbing him “Mr #ClearTheDanceFloor.”

Both Flex and Clue are on the air at the same time in New York City, so their competition has always teetered along the lines of real beef.
