HIPHOPDX

This week in Hip Hop, Lil Yachty blames his A&R for blundered “cello” lyric from his song “Peek A Boo” featuring Migos. Also, a dozen theories develop over PARTYNEXTDOOR calling some unknown casualty a culture vulture and XXXTENTACION engages in more beef, this time over the “Look At Me” beat.

Blow That What Like A Cello?

The Lil Yachty roasting was in full swing when his Teenage Emotions cut with Migos, “Peek A Boo,” was released. It was over a small line where he mistakes the string instrument — cello — for a woodwind instrument.

You don’t blow on a cello, for those who are less musically inclined, so the internet proceeded to tease him over it. He clarified the blunder with Genius.

“OK, let’s stop for a second,” Yachty says. “Before you come at me, I’ma let you know. I’ma blame my A&R. Because he listened to that song many times and he allowed me to say that.. I guess for a second, I thought a cello was a woodwind instrument and it is not. And nobody ever said shit. Nobody ever pulled up a pic and said, ‘Hey man. I don’t know if you know what this is, but it ain’t that.’ I fucked up. I thought Squidward played the cello. He don’t. That’s a flute. I fucked up. But it do sound good.”

By the way, Squidward plays the clarinet, not the flute.

Yachty isn’t the only rapper who has rapped uninformed lyrics. Find out who else here.

PARTYNEXTDOOR Is Over The Culture Vultures

Culture vultures are annoying and no one is as fed up with them as PARTYNEXTDOOR. Although he didn’t name names, someone out there who has a penchant for taking from the culture and passing it off as original had PND riled up enough to create a Snapchat rant for it.

Some say it’s for Drake, some say it’s for Bryson Tiller. Jeremih and Justin Bieber were also speculated targets. No one knows for sure, but the “Work” songwriter surprised fans with the release of his 4-track EP COLOURS 2, reminding everybody that he does this.

XXXTENTACION’s “Look At Me” Vs. A$AP Lotto’s “Illness”

XXXTENTACION got at A$AP Lotto over his “Look At Me” beat via Twitter DM following Lotto’s claim that the South Florida rapper recycled the production from his previously released song “Illness.”

XXX didn’t take too kindly to Lotto airing him out over it and indirectly threatened him with a you’ll “see me real soon” through a Twitter DM.

Both productions appear to be lifted from The Game’s 2012 song “Holy Water,” which samples Mala’s 2007 EDM song “Changes.” A lot of rappers have actually lifted Mala’s work for their own songs since The Game’s use in 2012, including Lil Dicky for his cut “Too High.”

DXclusives: Migos, G Perico & R.I.P. Yellow Benjy

HipHopDX created a handy guide for how to tell each member of Migos apart. From their tattoos to their signature flows, hopefully everyone can correctly name Quavo, Offset and Takeoff from now on.

DX also caught up with G Perico following the release of his debut album All Blue. With the 29-year-old’s new-found fame and popularity, the South Central rapper admits that he’s had to adjust the way he moves since he is a member of the Crips. His heightened profile resulted in him getting shot outside his own studio in 2016.

“I just gotta move more cautious,” Perico told HipHopDX. “I’m too valuable. Of course there’s a lot of people out there that don’t want to see me doing well for whatever reason or feel like they can make a name or reputation for themselves off of me. I’m fully aware of that and I understand it. Instead of me just getting mad and asking why, I just stay prepared and make sure I move the right way and keep the right people around me. The people around me have their eyes open and are paying attention. They’re not reckless, so we can make it home, keep living and keep going.”

Ghetto Brothers leader Benjamin “Yellow Benjy” Melendez passed away on Monday (May 29) at the age of 65. Amir Said, who co-wrote Ghetto Brother: How I Found Peace in the South Bronx Street Gang Wars with Benjy, spoke with DX and shared how Melendez passed away, calling him “one of the most transformative figures” he’s ever known.

“He died of natural causes,” Amir said. “He had kidney failure and had been waiting for a kidney transplant. His condition had gotten much worse over the last couple of years. I was told by his wife that yesterday (May 28) he fell and cut his arm badly. He was then rushed to the hospital. But given the complications of his kidney failure, sadly, he did not make it.”
