One of the biggest stories of last week stemmed from Lil Yachty’s appearance on Complex’s Everyday Struggle show with hosts Joe Budden, DJ Akademiks and moderator Nadeska Alexis.
Alongside Lil Boat’s controversial album art, the interview revolved around the much discussed “mumble rap” conversation.
At this year’s Power106 Powerhouse concert at the Glen Helen Amphitheater, Inglewood’s own Skeme (and Ugly God), who was performing alongside artists like Lil Wayne and Big Sean, spoke to HipHopDX. He had a clear message for anyone who doesn’t like the Hip Hop sub-genre.
“Aww man if y’all got a problem with mumble rap, suck my dick,” Skeme says. “Y’all weird as fuck. Niggas got dads who have been at the store for 15 years and y’all niggas worried about mumble rap. Let’s be serious. If a nigga wants to express himself in a certain way, y’all could never be mad at that if it’s working for him. At the end of the day, it’s a vibe, especially when you’re doing freestyles, going in the studio and getting a feeling for it. It’s all vibes so you can’t be mad at no nigga coming out with it a certain way.”

This comes after the Ingleworld rapper recently signed a deal with DJ Drama and Don Cannon’s Generation Now label, which is also home to another artist shelved under the mumble rap category — Lil Uzi Vert.
During the interview, Skeme also spoke on his relationship with Kendrick Lamar and the Compton rapper’s platinum-selling album, DAMN.
“Definitely a fan of my brother Kendrick, as he’s always going to be my dude,” Skeme says. “That album is crazy. I’m a fan of anything pushing things forward. He’s been here for a minute. That’s my brother for real. You know what’s a beautiful thing, bro? You get to a point where you and your music friends are calling you, and telling you about Grammys you’re both up for. You talking about two niggas who use to smoke Black & Milds together. This is crazy.”
Skeme is set to release his first project, Overdue, with the label sometime this summer. He recently dropped the video for the single “Red Coupe” featuring London Jae. Check it out below.
