This week in Hip Hop, J.Cole’s 4 Your Eyez Only project had the internet buzzing with memes, think pieces and our own Justin Hunte comparing him to Nas in the latest Breakdown segment. Elsewhere, Kanye West meets up with President-elect Donald Trump and makes an attempt to explain. Lastly, Soulja Boy gets arrested, unsurprisingly.

Is J. Cole Nas Without Illmatic?

With J. Cole’s release of his fourth studio album, 4 Your Eyez Only, DX gave the project a score of 3.9 out 5, calling it a “A conceptual piece about the ins and outs of street anthropology.”

While his over-zealous fans have been excited over Cole’s release, some have taken the moment to share what a snoozer it was and using that as a way to gain cool points on social media as was the case with a Utah hotel.

DX’s Justin Hunte, on the other hand, shook up the internet even further by comparing J. Cole’s career to Nas’ with the suggestion that he is this generation’s Escobar.

Pictures surfaced of the two smiling and along with it, memes galore and questions that needed desperate answers.

Ye, who admitted he was a Trump supported during one of his Saint Pablo Tour stops, clarified why he met with Trump on his Twitter. He has hopes that his meeting will help end the gun violence in his hometown of Chicago.

The Donald, who claims that he and the Grammy Award-winning artist have been long-time friends, even signed a Time Magazine with himself on the cover for the “Fade” rapper.

Since his meeting with Trump, he has since modified his choice to run for president from 2020 to 2024.

Hip Hop has shown mixed reactions to his meet-up with Donald. For YG, it’s still “Fuck Donald Trump” and for A$AP Ferg, he’s still trying to make sense of it.

One threat aimed towards Migos member Quavo was made into a song where he bragged about pulling up on him with an AK-47. A gun was found in his home after a tip complaining about those visible threats led police to his Hollywood Hills crib where he was found in violation of probation.

Of course, the internet laughed.

DXclusives: 2pac & Kosha Dillz

DJ King Assassin blessed 2pac fans with an early Christmas present in the form of a new version of Thug Life’s 1994 hit “How Long Will They Mourn Me?” with a never-before-released verse from Tupac. It also honored the life of Big Syke after his passing.

“It’s a version of ‘How Long Will They Mourn Me’ featuring Big Syke,” he exclusively tells HipHopDX. “It has me, Big Syke, Macadoshis on it. It’s produced by Warren G. What’s different on this one is that the verse from Tupac is totally different. Nobody’s heard this verse at all. No one. The song sounds different ’cause it’s a different mix. I always had it in the cut. I never planned on releasing it, but I think now that him and ‘Pac are gone people would want to hear anything from them.”

Lupe Fiasco announced his retirement from the rap game (once again) and with it came a freestyle which some have labeled as anti-Semitic.

Jewish rapper Kosha Dillz spoke with DX about his feelings toward Lupe after hearing the cut, which claims that Jewish music execs like to rob artists out of their royalties.

“Rolls Royce of the scented voice against the arms of the government/Artist gettin’ robbed for their publishing/By dirty Jewish execs who think it’s alms from the covenant,” Lupe rapped.

To that, Kosha says he doesn’t consider Lupe to be anti-Semitic and blames the line on him being frustrated and speaking from emotion.

“I think he said something and he reacted emotionally,” Dillz tells DX exclusively. “I think he needs a good Jewish friend who cares about him as a human and also knows the true value of being a Jew. Someone that wants nothing from him, only his happiness. I have done a show with him before, I know his people, and they reached out to me before even to congratulate me on success with my album. I was ecstatic. Jewish people love you Lupe.”
