The 6th Annual BET Awards nominations were disclosed last week at a star-riddled spotlight held in Los Angeles and streamed live right here BET.com. The event was hosted by Damon Wayans.
This year’s superstar showdown will air live on Tuesday, June 27 from Los Angeles’s historic Shrine Auditorium at 8 p.m. (ET)/7 p.m. (CT), (tape delay to Mountain and Pacific Time Zones) and will showcase the best in 15 categories in music, film, video and sports. Artist nominees such as Busta Rhymes, Keyshia Cole, Ne-Yo and Three 6 Mafia were on hand also when this year’s award contenders were announced. Busta Rhymes led the pack with four nods under his reinvention of self. Chris Brown, Kanyeze (Kanye West) and Beyonce followed with three nominations each.
This year’s ceremony also marks the introduction of a new category, the “BET J Cool Like That” Award. Pioneer songstress Chaka Khan will be honored at the awards ceremony with a BET Lifetime Achievement Award for her significant musical career, while Harry Belafonte will take home this year’s BET Humanitarian Award for his dedication to humanity. Khan, who was at the press junket expressed her gratitude “I’m really honored. It’s about time…this is a great honor for me. I worked really hard over those 30 years. I’m so blessed.”
This will also be the first time that Wayans has hosted the event.
Wayans had this to say about that fact, “I’m really happy and honored to be here. I don’t know what I’m going to do, but I’m at my best when I’m unpredictable. It’s gonna be balls to the walls. We’re gonna let it all hang out.”
