The music industry is mourning the loss of June Pointer, who passed away Tuesday (April 11) at the age of 52. Pointer was one-third of the Grammy Award-winning Pointer Sisters. The Pointer family released a statement in which cancer was listed as the cause of death. June died at Santa Monica University Medical Center surrounded by her sisters Ruth and Anita and their brothers Aaron and Fritz<./b>. Another sister, Bonnie, was not present. June had been hospitalized since late February after suffering a stroke as reported by BET News.
The Pointer family grew up singing in the choir of their church in Oakland, Calif. Bonnie and June formed a singing duo; they were later joined by Anita and Ruth. The Pointer Sisters earned their first hit in 1973 with the release of their single, Yes We Can Can.
Bonnie Pointer left the group in 1977 to pursue a solo career. The remaining three went on to record several albums and win awards. The trio is perhaps best known for such hit songs as Jump (For My Love), Slow Hand” and Neutron Dance, which was featured in the hit movie, Beverly Hills Cop. Though June eventually left the group, Anita. and Ruth continued to perform under the group’s name with Ruth’s daughter Issa Pointer in recent years.
Two years ago, June Pointer was arrested and charged with felony cocaine possession and misdemeanor possession of a smoking device. The funeral arrangements were still being finalized at press time.
