Fat Joe revisits comments he made about there being a “gay mafia” in Hip Hop.
During an interview with Vlad TV, Fat Joe was questioned about comments he made in an interview nearly five years ago. In his interview, the Bronx lyricist commented on there being a “gay mafia” in Hip Hop.
Fat Joe explained that his remarks were meant to serve as “a message of empowerment.”
“I think what people picked up from the interview…was that I was just telling people ‘Be yourself. Be proud of who you are,'” Fat Joe said. “Whether you’re Latino. Whether you’re fat. Whether you’re black. Whether you’re gay. Whatever. Jus be proud of yourself…Go out there and be who you are…It was actually a message of empowerment.”

Fat Joe’s initial comments on the “gay mafia” were made during a 2011 interview with Vlad TV. In his interview, the rapper stated the following:
“[Hip Hop] is the greatest gay market in the world. The Hip Hop community is most likely owned by gay. I happen to think there’s a gay mafia in Hip Hop. Not rappers – editorial presidents of magazines, the PDs at radio stations, the people who give you awards at award shows. This is the fucking gay mafia, man. They’re in power. So why wouldn’t a guy come out and say, ‘Yo, I’m gay’ and get that type of love? Like Lady Gaga, I don’t know if she’s gay but she’s running with that gay shit for real. And she’s winning. […] It’s 2011 going on 2012. I think if you’re gay, rep your set.”
