During his Twitter Q&A today (July 24), Eminem explained how he approached making “Phenomenal,” the main song from the Southpaw soundtrack, compared to “Lose Yourself,” the theme song from his 2002 film, 8 Mile.

Phenomenal is different from Lose Yourself,” Eminem says. “Its just grit and determination.

Eminem executive produced the soundtrack for Southpaw, which arrives in theaters today, 13 years after Eminem starred as the main character in 8 Mile, which was loosely based on his pre-fame life as an aspiring rapper in Detroit.

Eminem says that “Lose Yourself,” which is one of the Shady Records rapper’s best-selling singles, also had a different objective than “Phenomenal.
