MTV released its list of the ten greatest hip-hop albums of all time yesterday. With the help of Sway, Tone Boots and others, the video outlet compiled a list that reads as a who’s who of hip-hop history.

Both 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. made the list with The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory and Ready To Die coming in at number nine and number four respectively. Other artists who made the list include Ice Cube, N.W.A. and Dr. Dre.

In what may be a surprise to many younger hip-hop fans, neither 2Pac nor Biggie held down the number one spot, a position many think is owned by one of the two late emcees. Former Aftermath Records artist Rakim, along with partner Eric B. topped MTV’s list with Paid In Full. There was no controversy amongst the group of contributors and who could blame them? The album birthed classic cuts such as “I Ain’t No Joke”, “Paid In Full” and “Eric B. For President” and changed the way many emcees rhyme. Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid In Full beat out Illmatic by Nas, which was album number two and Dr. Dre’s ode to indo, The Chronic which snatched the number 3 spot.
