This week, Lil Wayne’s Gangsta Grillz Dedication 5 mixtape was released and reviewed, more details surrounding Drake’s Nothing Was the Same came to light, and ScHoolboy Q says he’s the best.

Lil Wayne’s Dedication 5 “The Best” Of The Series In Seven Years

On Sunday (September 1), Lil Wayne released Dedication 5, the follow-up to 2012’s Dedication 4. Described by DJ Drama as “mostly freestyles,” Wayne’s latest released features T.I., Chance the Rapper, Future, Mack Maine, Birdman, 2 Chainz, Vado, and many more.

HipHopDX reviewed the project, which turned out to be a mixed bag. “Still, much of Dedication 5 detracts from the series’ legacy. With a 29-song track list—which may also be a factor in Wayne’s renewed hunger—some of that negative ratio is a matter of volume.”

“The highlights are enjoyable, but too many songs fade into the background, making it a chore to find D5’s gems,” reads the review.”

However, Wayne’s latest mixtape turns out to be one of the better in the series. “To Wayne’s credit, Dedication 5 is the best the series has showcased since its legendary sequel from seven years ago, even if it pales in comparison. Occasionally, the YMCMB head honcho shows that he still has a portion of the skills that earned him his spot among rap’s elite.”

Dedication 5 is available for stream and download here.

“I never felt this confident in my music or this confident period,” said Q in a recent interview. “I just think I’m the best rapper right now.”

With fellow Black Hippy member Kendrick Lamar also vying for supremacy, ScHoolboy Q acknowledged his compatriot, but remained secure in his product. “There’s a little bit of pressure, but I’m not Kendrick and he’s not me,” he explained. “You can’t expect my album to sound exactly like his, but it’s gonna compete with his album…I know the album is good and I just want people to receive it in a good way. But the pressure, of course it’s there, a little bit. That’s fuckin’ Kendrick Lamar. When you say his name now, it’s a fuckin’ big deal…He’s up there with [Kanye West] and all that.”

ScHoolboy Q’s Oxymoron, which Mac Miller has opined is better than Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d cityis set for a 2013 release.
