With controversy still swirling around the recent reports of an intelligence unit in the Miami police force dedicated to keeping tabs on rappers, another layer has been peeled away. Reports of the Miami PD said their unit was developed with the assistance of the New York Police Department, which has ignited the speculation regarding the NYPD’s “Hiphop Task Force” once again.

Earlier this week the NYPD admitted to consulting with the Miami department and monitoring the music industry. A two month investigation has recently led to a retired detective claiming to be the founder and architect of the task force.

“We have an intelligence division and we have detectives that monitor the music industry and any incidents regarding the music industry,” says Officer Doris Garcia, an NYPD spokesperson. “And in regards to Miami P.D. we did exchange information, and that’s it.”
