As hip-hop continues to be the driving force of popular culture, mainstream media has no choice but to recognize the fabric of the culture at some point (as opposed to their regular exploitation of it). CBS’s Sunday Morning News is doing just that when they host Grandmaster Flash as he explains the history of the turntable.
Flash will be accompanied by his first apprentice and the man responsible for inventing the scratch, Grand Wizard Theodore. They will, among other things, explain their roles as pioneer DJ’s, Flash’s rebuilding of the mixer and their constant struggle to find appropriate needles. The show is scheduled to air on March 28th.
With the awareness of turntablism slowly growing (Berklee College of Music in Boston now has a class dedicated to turntablism, the first of its kind), Flash is also embarking 30 stop College/University Tour to continue the education process.
