Now in its sixth year, Kool Mixx 2004, the search for the best DJs and MCs in the nation, kicks off its 13-city competition today in Chicago. Local DJS match musical wits to earn the title of Kool Mixx Master 2004 in addition to scoring a cool first prize of $10,000 in cash, but first they will have to win at the preliminaries, city finals and semi-finals before earning their stripes at the finals when they return to the Windy City in July. Now, for the first time, Kool Mixx events will include MC battles as well.
More than 500 DJs have spun and scratched their way to notoriety at Kool Mixx events since 1998. The program was created to help elevate and promote the DJ, and now MC, culture which began as an underground phenomenon back over three decades ago.
Highly regarded as the most important of the four elements of Hip-Hop, the DJ has played an integral role in creating the music that defines the culture. Many of today’s hottest mix masters got their start in underground clubs, providing pulsating rhythms and groundbreaking beats for up-and-coming lyricists.
The Kool Mixx 2004 cities are Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Manhattan, Miami, New Orleans, San Francisco, St. Louis and Washington D.C., and, for the first time, will include Brooklyn and Houston.
