After Big Boi’s great performance with Earth, Wind & Fire and Andre’s unbelievable insane rendition of “Hey Ya,” there was little doubt what should come next. Fittingly, Outkast became the first hip-hop artist(s) to win the Grammy for “Album of the Year.” After winning what most regard as the most prestigious award in music, the duo were quick to give props to former Arista head honcho LA Reid; thanking him for allowing them to have a creative license and release the music they wanted, even if he didn’t get it.
As a fan of Outkast from the moment I heard their first single as they progressed to being my all-time favorite group, I couldn’t be happier for them…congrats fellas. I should also note that they took home the awards for Best Rap Album and Andre won for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for “Hey Ya.” Personally, I thought “Hey Ya” should have gotten the song of the year nod as well, but I can’t be mad Coldplay winning cause “Clocks” was some incredible shit.
In other hip-hop related awards, The Neptunes finally got their Producer of the Year award, and Eminem won Best Male Rap Solo Performance and Best Rap Song for “Lose Yourself.” Shouldn’t that have been at last year’s show? Em just happened to beat out 50 Cent in both of those categories, who came home empty handed. It looked like 50 couldn’t keep his ego in check either because after Evanescence beat him for Best New Artist he made an ass of himself by strolling up on stage while they were accepting the award.
