While in the Vatican City – the “capital city” of the Catholic Church – to perform a Christmas concert, Lauryn Hill spoke out against the Catholic Church and asked them to repent for their sins. Reading from a piece of paper, Hill told the audience and Church officials,”I’m not here to celebrate, like you, the birth of Christ, but to ask you why you are not in mourning for his death in this place…Holy god has witnessed the corruption of your leadership of the exploitation and abuses which are the minimum that can be said for the clergy.”
The Catholic Church (owned and operated by the Vatican Corporation) is regarded by some to be one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. Accusations of involvement in organized crime, molestations and murders have been made at the Church over the last 30 years.
One of the Church’s highest ranking members, Cardinal Camillo Ruini, was in attendance of the concert. His aide was not impressed by the statements made by Ms. Hill. He said she disrespected “the place she was in and for those who invited her.” The concert is scheduled to appear on Italian television, but don’t expect Hill’s comments to make it to the air.
