A publishing company representing Mike Love and Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys is threatening to sue Katy Perry for her Snoop Dogg collaboration “California Gurls.” The New York Post reports publishing company Rondor Music Group sent a letter to Perry’s label, Capitol Records, requesting Rondor get royalties and Love and Wilson get writing credits on Perry’s single, “California Gurls.”
The suit stems from similarities between Perry’s song and the 1965 Beach Boys song, “I Wish They All Could Be California Girls.” Snoop Dogg uses the phrase at the end of his collaboration with Perry. “California Gurls” is currently number two on Billboard‘s “Hot 100,” and it has been on the chart for 12 weeks after peaking at the top spot.
“I think the part she did is pretty cool,” Love told Billboard earlier this year. “There are a lot of writers on it, and I think it’s probably a stroke of genius to have the king of canine cool, Mr. [Snoop] Dogg, do his thing.”
Wilson’s representatives also told the Post Rondor owns the track, and initiated the potential lawsuit independent of the Beach Boys. Representatives for Perry and Rondor have yet to publicly address the matter.
