Ice Spice has undeniably experienced one of the quickest ascents to stardom in the annals of Hip Hop. Consequently, the “Deli” lyricist’s achievements have been subject to scrutiny.

In a recent interview with Variety following an appearance at the 2023 MTV VMAs, the princess of rap revealed how she’s managed the whisperings she’s an industry plant, admitting that at first the rumors were hurtful.

“A lot of people have thrown that in my face — like ‘Oh, I’ve never seen anything happen so quickly. She needs to be studied,’ or ‘She’s a plant,’” Ice Spice (real name Isis Naija Gaston) told the publication.

She added, “I just let people believe whatever they want to believe, to be honest. I don’t really mind all the rumors. At first, I did, but now I’m at a point where I understand that just comes with this lifestyle.”

Love her or hate her, the abundance of criticism hasn’t slowed Ice Spice’s rise. Earlier this month, the 23-year-old who has collaborated with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift, nabbed the Best New Artist title at the aforementioned award show — beating out beat out GloRillaKaliii, Peso Pluma, PinkPantheress and Reneé Rapp.

“Thank you so much. Thank you MTV. Oh my God, this is so cool,” the Bronx native began tearfully, before shouting out her fervent fanbase. “I just want to thank my Munchkins. I love you guys so much.”

“I want to thank my manager James [Rosemond Jr.]. I want to thank my producer Riot for making the best music with me. Shout out to all the other nominees in this category. I want to thank my label 10K and Capitol for always supporting me. And of course God. Without God none of this would be possible,” she added.

In the late summer of 2022, Ice Spice rose to fame when her song “Munch (Feelin’ U)” went viral on TikTok. Following collaborations with PinkPantheress on “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”; Nicki Minaj on “Princess Diana” and “Barbie Girl”; and Taylor Swift on a “Karma” remix, the curly-coifed rapper has become a household name.
