Donald Glover has referenced actor Chevy Chase once calling him the n-word during their time co-starring alongside one another in Community in the early 2010s.
Glover alluded to the racial slur incident while making a speech honoring writer-produced Paul Simms at the Writers Guild Awards in New York City on Sunday evening (March 5).

“This award was named after Herb Sargent, a writer who worked on Saturday Night Live and came up with Weekend Update with Chevy Chase.
“Chevy Chase once called Herb one of the funniest writers working in television. And Chevy Chase once called me…” Glover said before taking a pause. “You know, this is about Paul.”
While Glover stopped short of saying the racial slur, he has spoken about his issues with Chevy Chase in the past.
Chase starred in Community for the first four seasons (2009 to 2012) before quitting following a confrontation with the show’s creator, Dan Harmon, in 2012.
He reportedly once told Glover on set: “People think you’re funnier because you’re Black.”

Harmon added of the Glover-Chase dynamic: “Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off. I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-P.C. verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it.’”
Chase allegedly once went on a vicious rant directed toward Harmon where he dropped the n-word in the tirade voicing his frustrations with his Community character’s role.
Glover, who played former football star Troy Barnes on the show, ultimately stayed on for the first five seasons before Community ended after a sixth installment.
As far as his other creative endeavors, Glover confirmed in January that Childish Gambino will return at some point as he’s been locked in the studio working on new music.

“I’m making music right now,” the multi-hyphenate told E!. “I love it. I’m actually working. I’m in the studio. I’ve been, like, bringing people in — like secret people. Like, working on little things. But I’ve just been, like, making it for fun for right now. But soon, something will happen I promise. Something will happen.”
