Anthony Hamilton has received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Johnson C. Smith University, a historically Black university based in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
The Comin’ from Where I’m From singer received this special honor at the university’s Bojangles Coliseum on Sunday (May 21). To commemorate the accomplishment, the singer shared the special moment with fans via Instagram.

In the video, Hamilton is seen on stage with a face filled with pride as he receives his doctorate. “Introducing Doctor Anthony Cornelius Hamilton (Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts). THANK YOU Johnson C. Smith University and all who made this special moment possible,” Hamilton wrote in the caption.

The singer joins a long list of celebrities who have received honorary doctorates in recent months, like his former So So Def label head Jermaine Durpi and Bay Area legend E-40. Most recently, Usher received an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
The Confessions singer was made an honorary Doctor of Music at the Boston University’s Agganis Arena a few weeks back.
Dupri, a longtime collaborator and friend of the singer, attended commencement day with him and helped celebrate via Instagram. The producer received his own honorary doctorate from the Art Institute of Atlanta last May.
In the video, Usher sports a very dapper doctorate gown and tam with a huge smile on his face. As JD offers him some kind words, the crooner performs a quick reworked rendition of his classic track, “Nice & Slow,” which appropriately identifies him as Dr. Raymond.
