André 3000 has revealed that he had an “out-of-body” experience when revisiting music he made as one-half of OutKast.

In an interview with Grammy.com, the legendary rapper-turned-flute player spoke about spending hours listening to his group’s classic material in his hotel room one day.

“Recently, a friend of mine sent me a video of an interview that I was doing, and I was talking about a certain song that I hadn’t heard in a long time,” he said.

“So I went back to listen to that song, and that sent me down the rabbit hole of all my guest verses and OutKast stuff. So one day I was in my hotel room listening to all this stuff for hours — five hours of albums and guest stuff.”

3 Stacks then detailed his reaction to hearing his old work: “And it was surprising because you’re listening as a fan and not remembering where you were at the time when you did them. It’s almost like you’re having an out-of-body experience listening to yourself. Then you realize how much time has gone by and how different of a person you are, which is even crazier.”

André 3000 left many fans and peers disappointed last year when he admitted that he feels too old to continue rapping.

“Even now people think, ‘Oh, man, he’s just sitting on raps’ or, ‘He’s just holding these raps hostage.’ I ain’t got no raps like that,” he said in an interview with GQ.

“Sometimes it feels inauthentic for me to rap because I don’t have anything to talk about in that way. I’m 48 years old. And not to say that age is a thing that dictates what you rap about, but in a way it does.

“And things that happen in my life, like, what are you talking about? ‘I got to go get a colonoscopy.’ What are you rapping about? ‘My eyesight is going bad.’ You can find cool ways to say it, but…”

However, he later said that he would relish the challenge of making a full rap album, telling Highsnobiety: “I would love to make a rap album. I just think it’d be an awesome challenge to do a fire-ass album at 48 years old. That’s probably one of the hardest things to do! I would love to do that.”
