A Tribe Called Quest, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey have joined Eric B & Rakim among the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees.
The full list of artists nominated this year, which totals 15, was announced on Saturday (February 10) on the organization’s website and across its social channels. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and Eric B & Rakim having all been nominated previously but again returning to ballot for entry into the Hall of Fame.

To be eligible for nomination, an artist must have released their debut album at least 25 years earlier. Ten of the new nominees, including Carey, have never been previously nominated.
The other artists to be nominated for induction are Cher, Oasis, Jane’s Addiction, Peter Frampton, Sade, Lenny Kravitz, Foreigner, Kool and the Gang, Sinéad O’Connor, Dave Matthews Band and Ozzy Osbourne who has already been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath.

Fans can vote for up to seven of their faves, once per day through April 26 by visiting the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame’s website.
The final list of inductees will be announced in late April and will be honored at the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland this fall. The special will be livestreamed on Disney+ and re-aired on ABC and Hulu at a later date.
Hip Hop has a complicated relationship with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which, despite its title, honors all genres of music.
The first Hip Hop act to be inducted into the hall was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 2007 with Run DMC following two years later.

In the years since, they have been joined by Eminem, Beastie Boys, JAY-Z,Public Enemy, N.W.A., 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G. and Missy Elliott.
DJ Kool Herc has also been inducted in the “musical influence” category while Interscope Records founder Jimmy Iovine was inducted into the non-performer section in 2022.
LL Cool J inducted Herc last year and paid tribute to the legendary DJ and the impact he had on Hip Hop.
“It’s a culture that changed my life and changed the lives of millions and millions of people,” he said. “When Herc first started, there were no accountants or record companies that believed in it. But Herc believed in it.

“This is Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary, so it’s all the more appropriate that were are here to honor and recognize one of the founding fathers of hip-hop, DJ Kool Herc.”
For his part, Kool Herc gave special mention to his sister who actually organized and promoted the party that is credited with the birth of Hip Hop in the summer of 1973 in a bid to raise money for school clothes.
