HipHopDX Premiere: The video for Gilla’s latest track “Hallucination” beings with a stern warning: “Any props used in this video that show resemblance to any illegal materials are merely props and should be taken seriously. Do not try this at home.” From there, much like the title suggests, the Frocasso-directed visual goes into the Toronto-based rapper’s various paranoias.
As a member of the OVO-affiliated Reps Up crew, which features OVO Sound recording artist Baka (AKA Baka Not Nice), Drake’s personal bodyguard Chubbs and rapper P. Reign, Gilla is off and running. “Hallucination,” a remix of dvsn’s original version, is the result of a late-night studio session.
“I was in the club with dvsn and their song came on, and Daniel Daley [dvsn vocalist] was like, ‘Yo, you should remix this on some street shit, I know you would kill it,'” Gilla tells HipHopDX. “I went to the studio right after we left the club at like 3 a.m. and by about 7 a.m. I sent him and his team the completed song.”
Shot in an Ontario mansion, the visual was inspired by Beanie Sigel’s “Feel It In The Air” video, according to the director.

“[It’s based on] this idea of feeling paranoid, of always keeping your third eye open, despite the fact that things seem to be going great on the surface,” Frocasso explains to DX. “In the video, it’s hard to differentiate between whether what Gilla is going through is a dream or real life.”
Gilla plans on dropping a new mixtape in late 2017, Stay Solid Part Two. Until then, check out the video above.
