As The Weeknd gets ready to drop his next LP, Starboy, he’s built up plenty of anticipation for the release by first posting a photo of Daft Punk figurines on his Facebook account and then sharing the first single, “Starboy,” featuring contributions from the French electronic duo last week.
Today (September 28), the Canadian powerhouse has returned with visuals for the title track, which seems to illustrate a rebirth of sorts for The Weeknd. In the opening clip, he’s filmed being suffocated by an anonymous bad guy with his infamous hairdo still intact until he takes his last breath. In the next scene, he’s got a fresh haircut and appears more confident than ever as he begins using a neon cross to shatter trophies, plaques, and old photos.
Whether or not that’s the intended concept of the Grant Singer-directed video, with Daft Punk’s instrumental brilliance, the admittedly catchy track and equally effective visual make for an overall entertaining experience.
Starboy is scheduled for a November 25 release.
