The tragic passing of MC Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor of A Tribe Called Quest in March sparked a bevy of tributes to the fallen legend. After New York City Mayor’s Office approved a petition renaming Linden Boulevard “Malik ‘Phife Dawg’ Taylor Way,” it’s only fitting a mural commemorating Tribe’s “Check The Rhime” video should be erected on the corner of Linden Boulevard and 192nd Street in the St. Albans neighborhood of Queens, New York.
A video chronicling the creation of the mural on a local laundromat, where “Check The Rhime” was partly filmed, has been released and features interviews from the mural’s co-organizer Theron Smith and artist Vince Ballentine.
