From Bruce Springsteen and the Beastie Boys to Nas and Johnny Cash, photographer Danny Clinch has spent the majority of his life capturing the images of some of music’s most iconic artists.

In 1993, he got a phone call from Rolling Stone and was offered an opportunity to photograph the legendary Tupac Shakur. Of course, he immediately jumped at the chance, which resulted in one of Tupac’s most recognizable photos.

Clinch’s portrait originally ran for the short Rolling Stone profile story, but three years later on September 13, 1996, when Tupac was murdered in Las Vegas, Rolling Stone ran one of the portraits on the cover. Twenty years after the West Coast rapper’s death, TIME magazine gave Clinch the platform to reflect on his experience working with the Tupac in the video above.
