The rapper-singer-Terrence Howard-from–Empire-lookalike can definitely rap. That’s clear now. The wildest part though is that artists typically flip the crowd down the line, after they’re established, like how Drake recently became a trapstar. Jidenna did it on his third release! “Classic Man” and “Yoga” are slick records but “Long Live The Chief” shows Jidenna‘s versatility. This industrial record will change your life up right now.
If one listens to the lyrics literally, it would seem that “Long Live The Chief” is the story of Jidenna‘s presidential candidacy that never materialized. He says: “Nigga at worst I could run the whole country.” It would appear Jidenna had access to a lot of opportunities growing up – claiming he met Bill Clinton at age 17, rejected enrollment at Harvard University and used to eat supper with the governor and his daughter.
Jidenna is signed to Janelle Monáe’s Wondaland imprint. Look out for The Eephus EP from Wondaland this month.
