’88 is an ode to his birth year, but also to the culture he is an avid student of. 1988 is what many consider to be the golden year of Hip Hop being that defining albums from NWA, Run DMC, 2 Live Crew, Public Enemy and Too $hort, to name only a few, were released.Nick’s a product of that era when a great deal of significance was placed on an artist’s/group’s storytelling ability and uniqueness. The song is about going after the crown in hip-hop, which is the respect.
