True school Los Angeles collective Jurassic 5 is probably best recognized for their towering baritone Chali 2na. Like most groups today, J5’s artists also have solo careers, and this is beginning for Chali 2na. With his Interscope solo debut “Fish Outta Water” set to drop in ’05, Chali has taken the mixtape route to bring you up to speed on his solo work.

“The Fish Market” however, doesn’t really classify as solo work, it is really just Chali sans J5 (with a few exceptions). The bulk of the mixtape highlights 2na’s multitude of guest spots over the last few years. Among those that should be heard are “Work It Out” with Supernatural, “Lunch Time” with Click Tha Supa Latin and “Sweet Science” with Rasco. Chali even goes international rocking with the Canadians (Swollen Members on “Full Contact” and Kardinall and Solitair on “Please Believe”), and the British (Roots Manuva on “Revolution 9” and “Join The Dots”).

Despite the lack of new material, “The Fish Market” is worth having for a number of reasons. It brings together all of 2na’s work in one nice, neat package. This should be appealing to both hardcore and casual J5 fans alike. Plus you’ve got a number of good tracks here from artists you may not have heard before. I would suspect that many of you may be inclined to check out Roots Manuva after hearing “Join The Dots.” So consider stopping by the fish market, tuna just may hit the spot.
