Who this is…
DJ JS-1 and Dub-L, DJ/producer’s responsible for last years who’s who of indy hip-hop compilation “Ground Original.”
What this is…
19 songs of hip-hop, no gimmicks. JS-1 and Dub-L handle all of the production and do a decent job. The highlights come with guest appearances from the likes of Common, J-Live, Jeru, Percee P, C-Rayz Walz, Jemini and Percee P.
Why you should listen…
“All of Y’all” – J-Live
“Rule #4080” (classic!!)
“Truly Incredible” – Supernatural (off the dome in two takes!)
“NY Minute” – Mr. Complex & L-Fudge
“Makes The World Go Round” – Jemini
“Anti” – 5ft Perspectives
“Got It Poppin'” – C-Rayz Walz (although I could swear I’ve heard it elsewhere)
“Won’t Stop” – Jeru the Damaja
“My Instrumental 97” – Percee P & React (for Percee P’s verse alone, he kills it)
Why you shouldn’t listen…
“God Vs. The Devil” – Dub-L (good concept, terribly executed though)
“Lie” – Tribe Starr
AD LOADING...
All in all…
A nice solid, but unspectacular compilation. The featured emcees aren’t as abundant or as impressive from front to back as they were on last year’s “Ground Original.” Much like that album, JS-1 and Dub-L’s production ranges from average to good. Nothing is gonna blow your socks off here, but you shouldn’t be reaching for the fast forward button either. What that means? It’s a good album and worth a few spins.
