“Warning! This album does not contain dance tracks, R&B songs, rock/rap, neo-soul, eclectic crap, catchy jingles, wanna-be turntablist tracks, singing thugs, or wack emcees…This album was created to give you a good mix of lyrics, beats, and scratches…Nothing else. Respect to all those that came before us and those who continue to make good hip-hop music.”
Really, that about says it all concerning what to expect from this album. Fortunately, veteran ‘ablist DJ JS-1 has the connections to hook-up exclusive material from artists who are all exponents of pure hip-hop. From all across the map, enough ill emcees contributed their talents; KRS-One, Royce Da 5’9, Evidence, Planet Asia, Ill Bill, Pep Love, Percee P, Kool G Rap, C-Rayz Walz, Masta Ace, O.C., Big Daddy Kane and more.
“Ground Control” may be JS-1’s compilation, but the emcees steal the show. There are outstanding posse cuts, “Nowadays” (Evidence, Pep Love, C-Rayz Walz, React) and “Arrogant” (Substantial, Rise, Pack FM, Tonedef). Slammin’ duets, “Essentials” (KRS-One & Rahzel), “Drugs In My Vain” (C-Rayz Walz & Breez Evaflowin’), “Turn It Up” (Punch & Words), “Unstoppable” (Percee P & Planet Asia), and “Audio Technician” (Lifelong & Immortal Technique). Not to be outdone are the solo joints, standouts include “Ak Like You Know” (Akrobatik), “What Am I? Pt.1″ (Masta Ace), License 2 Ill” (Ill Bill) and “Beyond” (O.C.)
Outside of 6 tracks, JS-1 and partner Dub-L handled all the production work. They keep things solid all the way through, without bringing any wack shit. At the same time, nothing will totally blow you away to the point you are hitting repeat a few times. This album will appeal to many, from those who just skim below the surface, to those who burrow deep into the underground. “Ground Control” is a fresh compilation, and while the beats may not blow everyone away, they are accessible, consistent, and will ultimately keep your head in motion. The heart of the album still lies in the vast number of mics that are set on fire.
