Few emcees have built such a legendary name for themselves without so much as dropping an album, not to mention coming out of Indiana. Supernatural is nothing short of a legend, as he is well regarded as the world’s best freestyle emcee. That hefty title has been earned, and it has been defended. Supernat has wowed audiences worldwide with his incredible lyrical dexterity and creativity; most impressive when he crafts his rhymes with words the audience shouts out to him or objects they hold up in the air. In 2002, Supernat signed with indy upstart Babygrande, his first deal since his ill-fated stint with Elektra in ’94.
“The Lost Freestyle Files” is not your regular LP, it acts more as a sample (before the real album late this year) to show what Supernat is all about. There is no better way to get people amped than to include his legendary freestyles, from his 10 minute battle with Juice at “Get Ready To Rumble” to the showdown with Craig G at “Clash of the Titans.” Not to mention, his first ever appearance on Sway & Tech’s Wake Up Show in the 90’s and some crazy rhymes off the dome for Stretch and Bobbito. The album isn’t all freestyles though, Supernat for six tracks (plus a remix).
Joe Buddha gets nice on two tracks as he laces Supernat with “Cosmic Slop” and “Work It Out.” The latter is an outstanding posse cut featuring Iriscience, Chali 2na, Akil and Mark 7. Supernat gets a little more rugged when he teams up with label mate Vinnie Paz and they rock over some dark production from Panic of the Molemen on “Suckaz.” The aptly-titled “Internationally Known” displays some outstanding chemistry between Supernat and DJ Rhettmatic.
Whether or not this is a real album, it is a terrific representation of Supernatural. For those who haven’t heard his classic battles or mind-blowing freestyles, this album should be your next purchase. “The Lost Freestyle Files” is a treat for long time fans as well though as all the new material is quite nice and you can listen to Supernat go toe-to-toe with Juice a few more times.
